12/24 Terrace retaining wall
- approx. 14 metres to
north-east of Loton Park
GV II
Terrace retaining wall. Dated 1835, probably by Thomas Jones of Chester.
Uncoursed red sandstone rubble with red sandstone ashlar dressings and
parapet. Shallow U-plan; approximately 80 metres long, returning to
south-west at each end. Parapet with chamfered plinth (forming string course
to north-east), chamfered coping, 2 sections with square-section
balusters, and ramped up to centre at south-east end; square piers with
urns; chamfered depressed arch at south-east end leading to barrel-vaulted
tunnel beneath terrace (keystone dated 1835 and brick in tunnel dated 1842).
Thomas Jones carried out alterations at Loton Park (qv) in c.1830 and c.1838
and was probably responsible for the terrace, in front of the c.1711
north-east front.
