House. Mid C18 with C16 remains. Altered 1948 when mid C19 extensions
were demolished. Brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings and
hipped slate roof. 2 storeys. Half-H plan. South front has plinth,
chamfered quoins, cornice partly hidden by timber gutters, and sashed
windows with glazing bars and rusticated lintels. Wings each of 2 bays.
Recessed centre of 3 bays. Central doorway has rusticated surround.
Chimneys to left and right. At the rear of the right-hand wing is a C17
projecting stone stack with offsets. Interior: ground and 1st floors
contain little of architectural interest. The roof trusses over the
centre and right-hand wings appear to be C18 and have tie-beams and
raking struts. The purlins are windbraced. Some of the timber is re-used
from a timber-framed building. The 4-bay roof over the left-hand (west)
wing shows evidence for a timber frame encased within the present
building. The trusses have tie-beams and raking struts. Curved braces to
principal posts are visible, as is part of the wattle and daub infill
below the eastern wallplate. The northern truss is numbered 'III' and the
one to its south 'IIII', implying that 2 trusses have been removed,
probably when the C17 stack was inserted and the gable wall rebuilt in
stone.
