Latest part of the Co-operative Society building. Dated on foundation
stone 1914. Baroque. Ashlar. Two storeys and attic. Eight bays,
the north west end curving around a corner site. The bays are divided
by ground floor pilasters and 1st floor ½ columns, between which, at
first floor level is a canted oriel, mullioned and transomed with 6-lights.
Continuous undulating apron with elaborate panel below each centre light.
Continuous undulating bracketed entablature and deep parapet with elaborate
centre panels and pierced between bays. The 1st floor bay to left is
different: a balcony with columns supporting the fulldentilled entablature
where it cants forward. Above this is a balustraded parapet fronting a
shaped gabled dormer flanked by octagonal buttresses with domical caps,
and surmounted by a scrolled pediment with tall finial. Mainly modern
shop fronts to ground floor. 2 bays to right have arched openings with
Gibbs surrounds. Centre 2 bays have good elegant contemporary shop
front, with carved and turned, swept wooden glazing bars. Elaborate
door set back in mirrored porch with mosaic pavement. The attic storey
rises well behind the parapet.
