8/185 The Old School

GV II

Former school, 1844 for Rev R. Ashe of Langley House, squared
rubble stone with ashlar dressings, stone slate roof, coped gables
and south end stack. Single storey, Tudor-style, T-plan. Main
range has three 3-light windows with pointed heads, hoodmoulds and
leaded lights. Cross wing has 4-centred arched doorway with
hoodmould, first floor 2-light hoodmould, Ashe arms above and date
carved under apex saddlestone. North side has ground floor single
light and 2-light, with hoodmoulds, and first floor 2-light in
dormer gable. School closed in 1975. Associated with the Rev
Francis Kilvert.
