Description

BURY ST EDMUNDS

TL8563NW FRIARS LANE
639-1/15/354 (West side)
02/09/85 No.2

GV II

A pair of cottages, now made into one house. C18; deeds said
to go back to 1760. Timber-framed with roughcast rendering;
C20 pantiles; plain bargeboards.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with a one-and-a-half storey lean-to along
the rear. 2-window range. Externally the building still has
the appearance of 2 cottages. An internal chimney-stack with a
large square red brick shaft. 2 sash windows to the ground
storey with flush frames and 2 vertical bars to lights; two
2-light small-paned casement windows to the upper storey. 2
late C20 8-panel doors in plain rectangular surrounds.
INTERIOR: the 2 halves of the building are linked by one
communicating door only and their original cottage layout is
virtually unaltered. Each half has a corridor leading from the
entrance door to the kitchen area in the rear lean-to and a
single living-room with the staircase behind it. There is a
bedroom over the living-room and another in the lean-to. Each
living-room has a main ceiling beam, with small chamfer and
simple stops, exposed. A pair of cottages of this date is a
rarity in Bury St Edmunds.
