1825-8 by William Parsons the County Surveyor. With addition of 1844-6
by M.J. Dain. Gatehouse of ashlar with castellated parapet on corbel
table and large circular castellated angle turrets with arrow loops moulded,
four-centred arch entrance in recess with moulded depressed arch and mock
portcullis. To right and left matching blocks of 1844-6. ashlar two storeys,
smaller circular turrets with battlements, Governor's House on left projects
with stone mullion/transom windows, stone chimneys with moulded cornices.
Behind is high unbroked perimeter wall of 1825-8, red brick, slightly
battered, circular buttress turrets at intervals and larger angle turrets,
stone caps and coping to turrets and walls. The following building within
the perimeter wall are not of sufficient quality for listing. Polygonal
beeplike tower of 1828 at centre, brick, castellated, with six-spoke wings,
some demolished. Circa 1846/7 large rectangular block with slate hipped
roof with two large hexagonal chimneys.
