House. 1766-73 by Robert Adam, as estate house for Sir James Lowther, part of a
model village which was never completed; altered in early C19. Cement rendered
walls with painted string course, under graduated hipped greenslate roofs with
banded cement-rendered chimney stacks. 2 storeys, with central recessed bays
and flanking 2-bay gabled wings; single-storey, single-bay pavilions at each
end. Central plain boarded door in shouldered pilastered surround. Sash
windows in painted stucco surrounds, except for plain reveal over entrance.
Left pavilion has plank door in segmental archway and right one has large sash
window with glazing bars. See Ancient Monument Society's Transactions, 14,
