2 houses. 1765-73 by Robert Adam as estate houses for Sir James Lowther, part
of a model village which was never completed. Mixed sandstone rubble walls,
with string courses on 2-storey parts. Graduated greenslate roofs,those at ends
hipped; banded cement-rendered chimney stacks. One quadrant of a circus;
central part single storey, 10 bays, with 2-storey single-bay wings at either
end. Plank doors at either end of single-storey range and C20 casement windows
with glazing bars in original plain reveals, all with red sandstone lintels and
sills. Originally divided into numerous houses and by the early 1960s
semi-derelict, but altered with HBC grant in 1965. See Ancient Monument
