Eight houses.1766-73 by Robert Adam as estate houses for Sir James Lowther,part of a model village which was never completed.Mixed sandstone rubble walls,under hipped graduated greenslate roofs with banded incised rendered chimney stacks.Built in open courtyard plan with houses on three sides of a square turned back at right-angles at each end."Palace" facade closing courtyard two storeys,seven bays;remainder single storey,numerous bays.Two-storey range has three-bay recessed centre and flanking gabled wings.Two off-centre plank doors in plain openings with red sandstone lintels.C20 casement windows in original plain reveals with red sandstone lintels and sills.Single-storeyed parts were originally divided into many more houses,the doors of which have been blocked,some only partly to form windows.Otherwise plank doors and C20 casement windows in plain reveals.HBC grant aided in 1965.
