Probably C17, altered C18. 3 storeys colourwashed brick. 1st floor string
and moulded and coved cornice. Steep gable end old tile roof. Elaborate front
with 3 storey projecting bays flanking and slightly projecting 3 storey central
bay with moulded cornice head, the roof carried down to 1st floor ceiling
level between bays. Left hand bay is fully glazed to upper floors, late C18
3 sash lights to front, one each side, overhanging carriageway on ground floor
giving access to No 47 the High Street qv. The right hand bay is not so wide
and is tile hung. Similar fenestration to upper floors but leaded casements,
some altered and blocked. The centre bay has angle pilasters to 2nd floor.
One 2 light easement to 1st and 2nd floors. The intervening recessed bays
have one window each on 1st floor: No 49 has paired flush framed sashes glazing
bays intact, No 51 has 3 light leaded casement. On ground floor plain early
Cl9 shop fronts under common frieze and cornice. Formerly 2 doors next to
outer bays and central doors the left hand door now converted to window.
However this window and the central entrance to No 49 both retain remains
of flankingstone piers. The shop door of No 51 to right has early Cl9 glazing
with rectangular, radiating and wreathed, fanlight. C18 wing to rear of No
49 with narrow slightly projecting brick bays.
Nos 37 to 51 (odd) form a group with Nos 50 to 58 (even) & No 64.
