Holyoake Farmhouse and Holyoake House

Farmhouse, now 2 houses. Late C16 and C17; partly rebuilt and extended late
C18/early C19. Timber framed: close studding, square framing and ornamental
panelling with whitewashed brick and plastered infill. Rebuilding and additions
in whitewashed brick; part with brick dentil cornice. Tile roof; brick end,
lateral and internal stacks. Complex plan. 2 storeys; 4-window range. Left cross
wing (Holyoake House) has close studding to ground floor, square framing to
first floor, and ornamental panelling to gable. Jowled posts. Adjacent brick
cross wing projects further forward and has external stack. Range on right has
some square framing to part of first floor only. Entrance has 4-panelled door in
moulded wood surround with hood on shaped brackets. Left cross wing has 4- and
3-light wood mullioned windows. Remainder has casements. Leaded lights
throughout. Central wing has one-light window to ground floor only, but right
return side has 3-light window to each floor. Main range has 2-light window on
ground floor, and 4-light and 2-light on first floor. Ground floor windows under
brick segmental arches. Left return side has exposed framing on right, with
close studding below and square framing above. Remainder of whitewashed brick.
C20 half-glazed door. Open timber framed porch. Irregular fenestration. Lateral
stack. Right return side of main range has some coursed lias on ground floor,
and C19 brick above. Long whitewashed brick wing, possibly formerly outbuilding.
Interior: Holyoake Farmhouse has some exposed framing. Chamfered ceiling beams.
2 open fireplaces, one with bread oven. Straight flight staircase. 2-panelled
and 6-panelled doors. Interior of Holyoake House not inspected. The house is
named after the Holyoake family who held it C18 and C19.
