(South Side)

11/14 Pear Tree Cottage

GV II

Small house. 1770. Brick walls and tiled roof. Near symmetrical front (north)
of 2 storeys, 2 windows. Plain roof, with catslide at rear. The walls are
red brick headers, with a thin eaves fillet, and cambered arches to the ground-
floor. Casements, the east end gable has an upper early C20 oriel, with a
hipped tile roof. Plain doorframe, with a moulded canopy on carved brackets,
and a 6-panelled door. Above the doorway, several bricks are incised with
initials, including WT WL HH JW WP; in the same position is a lead Sun fire
insurance sign, number 279234, known to have been issued on the 2nd January 1770
for ... "The new house and shop". The upper wall on the east side has a
wrought-iron bracket and gas lamp frame. Photographs show that the shop was
a blacksmiths' forge, a single-storeyed building (now gone) to the east of the
house, and that a pear-tree grew against the front wall.
