Block of 2 houses. C17. Timberframed roughcast and pinkwashed,
with old red tile gabled roof. A long 2 storeys, 4 windows block
of 2 houses facing N, on a bank overlooking the lane. Large
central red brick chimney and contemporary external gable
chimneys. 2-light casement windows and boarded doors with
dripboards over. Single storey plastered brick shed, the former
village bakehouse, with pitched tiled roof attached to E end of
No 26. An area of original weatherboarded on the E end of the
house is exposed in the shed. The block appears to have
originated as 2 houses, each with 2 heated rooms and winding
staircase beside the gable chimneys to chambers above. Altered
to 4 houses in the late C19 with 2 more staircases beside central
chimney and narrow service rooms partitioned off the rear of the
rooms. The interior has exposed squared beams and joists, thin
wall studs and straight diagonal braces. Cambered tie beams and
high set purlins. Face-halved bladed scarf joint in rear wall
plate of No 26. The 1st floor structure is differently arranged'
in each house. No 26 has 2 cross beams and axial joists. No 24
has a central cross beam, axial beams and cross joists. A series
of numbered joints are exposed on the rear wall of No 26 in the
single storey kitchen extension of c1980. An historic block of
picturesque timberframed C17 houses. Part of a group in this
part of the village Conservation Area. -
