House. C17 or earlier, E part possibly a later extension.
Timber frame roughcast on plastered red brick sill. Very steep
thatched roof hipped at W and with higher eaves in E part.
Originally probably a 2-cell house facing S with an end chimney
at E, with slightly later one and a half storeys E extension
beyond the chimney. Single storey W part has slightly battered
end wall and central plank door flanked by 3-light flush
mullioned wooden casement windows with leaded lattice glazing. A
small ceramic plaque each side of door give information on Lamb.
Single small leaded window to E part on S wall, with door and
window in end wall and 2-light leaded attic window. Owned by
Charles Lamb from 1812 to 1815 and mentioned in his essay 'My
First Play'. Presented by Mrs Greg to the Royal Society of Arts
and acquired by the Charles Lamb Society in 1949. (Ewing (1928)
133-4).
