House. Early C18 with mid-late C19 alterations and rear kitchen addition,
renovations of c1983-4. Brick, rendered. Pantile roof. L-shaped on plan:
2-room central lobby-entry south wing, 2-room, central entrance-hall east
wing; later kitchen wing in rear angle. 2 storeys, 3 bays to south and east
fronts. Symmetrical south front. Entrance has C19 doorcase with pilasters
carrying entablature and hood, 6-fielded-panel door beneath moulded lintel
and plain overlight in reveal. Contemporary wooden canted bay windows to
either side with 4-pane front sashes, similar entablatures with moulded
cornices, hoods and hipped roofs. First floor: C19 4-pane sashes in earlier
flush wooden architraves with sills. Dentilled brick eaves cornice. Roof
hipped to right. Large axial stack. Right return forms east front: C20
glazed door beneath plain overlight, flanked by C20 French windows to right
and 4-pane sash in flush wooden architrave to left. First-floor sashes and
eaves cornice similar to south front. Projecting end stack to right gable
end. Left return (west side): front range has 4-pane sliding-sash stair
window, first-floor 12-pane sash in flush wooden architrave, and attic board
door with strap hinges; kitchen addition has large 16-pane sash, small C20
casement to ground floor, pair of C20 casements to first floor, dentilled
brick eaves cornice, end stack. Interior. East entrance hall has a good
early C18 open-well closed-string staircase with a heavy ramped corniced
handrail, mitred over the newel posts, a corniced string, column-on-vase
balusters with round knops, and a column foot-newel post; staircase
framework incorporates heavy oak timbers. South front has narrow entrance
passage driven through base of stack. Rooms to each side retain original
fireplaces, that to left with inglenook beneath chamfered oak bressumer,
that to right with inserted basket arch beneath oak bressumer made from
section of former timber frame. Main south and east rooms on both floors
have chamfered oak spine beams, those to ground floor with cyma stops.
Original 2-fielded-panel doors with H and L hinges. Roof (not investigated)
retains original timbers. The small C19 shop adjoining to south east is not
included in the listing.
