GV II
Large barn. Late C17 or early C18, later additions. Irregular
Flemish-bond brickwork, tiled roof. Two threshing floors dividing
barn into 3 equal parts, porches one side, lean-to against main
walls that side. Barn, plinth with bullnose top, plain string
course mid way up wall, clasping corner buttresses at ends and to
porches, also in angle between porches and main building. Two
rows of 4 slit air vents in each main barn section. Right return,
4 slit air vents bottom half, above 2, with central square pitching
hole, cambered brick arch. Plain string course at eaves level, 3
and above 2 slit air vents, further plain string and oval owl hole
in top of gable. Right porch: 1 slit air vent each level right
return, elliptical-headed double boarded doors in centre, stone
hinge blocks, small door cut in right half. Gable above rebuilt.
Left return single air vent upper level, front; central pilaster
buttress, elliptical-headed boarded door beyond in wall thickening.
Left half barn, mirror of right. To right first porch C20 lean-to
extension not of special interest: in centre between porches
originally open fronted, brick sides projecting from porches, later
infilled brick with sliding door, window on left (used for feed
preparation). On left of left-hand porch 2 brick looseboxes, 2
boarded stable doors centre, shuttered windows, each side, all with
cambered brick arches.
Interior: 8 bays: doors opposite porches low, elliptical heads, 2
air vents above. Air vents splayed inside; trusses tie-beam
collar and angle struts, 2 pairs purlins, square ridge. A good,
well-preserved example of an early, large brick barn. Forms group
with house (q.v.).
