Large detached house. Mid/late C17 south-west range, enlarged on
south-east side early C18 and to north-west in C19. Random or
coursed rubble stone, stone slate roof with coped verges and large
ashlar stacks with moulded cornices, including ridge stack to
south-west front with diagonally-set paired flues. Large U-shaped
range, mostly 2 storeys and attic. Entrance front to south-east
has moulded stone cornice and parapet to link 4-bay coursed stone
extension to right to 2 original rubble stone bays to left. Six
windows, 12-pane sashes in moulded stone surrounds, 4 to right with
large flush stone lintels. Ground floor has 5 similar windows, 2
to left with single relieving arch over, 3 to right and flat-arched
doorway to left of centre with moulded stone jambs and lintel and 8
fielded panels to door. Older south-west front has 2 gables,
coped with kneelers, each with 3-light stone mullion. First floor
has 2/4/2/4-light with relieving arches over 4-light, ground floor
has similar, all with relieving arches. All windows ovolo-moulded
with square hoodmoulds. North end has hipped roof which sweeps
down to single storey with 2 gabled attic dormers, all rebuilt
after a fire in 1960s. Additional C19 two-storey cottage
adjoining in north-west corner with cambered stone archery openings.
Interior has fine panelled room with shell cupboards on ground
floor of C18 extension, and some panelling in C17 rooms.
Pair of gatepiers to south-east of ashlar, square on bases, with
indented corners and widely projecting moulded cornices, with
square caps and flattened pyramidal finial, about 3m total height.
Coped rubble stone wall sweeps up to piers, down in centre and up
again at ends to join perimeter wall, about 10m total length.
Gates of wrought iron probably of C20 and not of special interest.
