GV II*

Large country house. c1740 for Thomas Palling. Ashlar limestone;
ashlar and artificial stone rebuilt chimneys; stone slate roof.
Three-storey; screen wall links with service building to east.
Front: 7-window fenestration, all 12-pane sashes with thick
glazing bars in openings with keyed moulded architraves and bull-
nosed sills. Central segmental pedimented Doric doorway with 8-
panel fielded door. Plain floor level bands; moulded parapet
coping. Single-storey high screen wall to right has open
balustraded parapet, two 4-pane sashes with keyed moulded
architraves, similar doorway with carved panel inscribed 'ECL
1906'. Rebuilt moulded parapet gabled end of outbuilding to
right. Sides: off-centre mainly mullioned fenestration. Rear:
floor level bands continued over 2 projecting chimney stacks, one
with original shaft having moulded cap. Central Venetian stair
window with Gothick leading. Two 2-light recessed cavetto
mullioned casements to each floor.
Interior: principal room has fielded panelling with dentil-
enriched cornice and moulded dado rails. Full height Ionic
pilasters to chimney piece, now with C19 fireplace. Fielded
shutter panelling and matching window seats. Contemporary
staircase now has painted balustrade, moulded and ramped handrail
having 2 turned balusters per tread and bracketted strings.
Panelled plank and muntin screen to former kitchen. Moulded round
hall archway with imposts. A complete house of the period with a
plain, if well balanced, facade. Gate screen (q.v.) to south, and
stables and coach house (q.v.) to south east complete group.
