A late C16 timber-framed and plastered house with an C18 cross wing at the north
end. It stands on an island site and is an interesting and picturesque building
with much original ornamentation. The fronts are now cement rendered but panels
of C17 pargetting have been preserved on the east and west fronts, 3 storeys,
attics and cellars. 2 window range on the east and west fronts, of the C16 block
and 1 window range on the C18 cross wing. C18 fenestration, double-hung sashes
with glazing bars (some with vertical glazing bars), The west front is double-jettied
with moulded fascias, on shaped brackets (the lower bracket at the south end
is carved). There are 2 C17 pargetted panels, one of a Tudor rose and crown
and the other a Royal Coat of Arms. The east front was originally double-jettied
and part of the upper jetty survives in a recessed centre panel on the 1st storey
containing a C17 pargetted panel with griffons and a heraldic device surrounded
by a floral border. All the C17 pargetting was much defaced in the C18. The .
ground storey is built out with a C20 shop and the C18 crosswing has a C19 bow
window. Roofs tiled, with 1 gabled dormer on the east front. RCHM (47).
