Nos. 37 and 39

No 37 was probably a C15 timber-framed building but was completely altered and refronted in 1758. A red brick front with a parapet and a modillioned cornice has gault brick dressings, quoins and bands. Three storeys and cellars. Seven window range overall (arranged 2:3:2), the centre part, of three window range, breaks forward slightly under a modillioned pediment with a blocked circular window in the tympanum. The windows are double-hung sashes with unusual glazing bars in octagonal panes. The central window on the first storey has a brick architrave and the central window on the second storey has a semi-circular head with gault brick keystone and impost blocks. Raised gault brick bands run between the first and second storeys. At the rear there is a long timber-framed and plastered warehouse wing, probably C18. At the north end of the east front there is a covered passageway with some exposed timber-framing (see also No 33 qv) and original moulded ceiling beams. RCHM (40).
Nos 31, 33, 37, 39 form a group with No 40 on the east side.
