House. C17 and early C19, altered in C20. Timber framed, plastered with some
painted brick, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. C17 4-bay range facing NE
with internal stack at right end, and C20 semi-circular single-storey extension
to front. Early C19 3-bay range to left with internal stack at each end. 2
storeys and cellar. The right range has C20 casements. The left range has on
the ground floor 2 original sashes of 16 lights with crown glass, and on the
first floor 2 similar sashes and one of 12 lights over the central door. Flush
6-panel door in simple doorcase with moulded pediment on scrolled brackets. All
rear windows are C20 casements, with a C20 half-glazed door. The right range
has chamfered binding beams with lamb's tongue stops, and plain joists of
vertical section. The left range has boxed axial beams and an original stair
with wreathed moulded handrail, stick balusters and scrolled tread-ends. Shown
as Gurton's Farm in tithe award of 1853 (Essex Record Office, D/CT 87).
