Barn. C.1300, repaired in C17/C18. Timber framed, weatherboarded, roofed with
red clay 'Roman'tiles and handmade red clay plain tiles. 5 bays, aisled on both
sides, aligned NNW-SSE, with great doors at both sides of middle bay. Hipped at
both ends and over great doors, these parts roofed with plain tiles, the main
pitches with 'Roman' tiles. Jowled arcade posts, arched braces to tiebeams and
arcade plates, splayed scarfs with undersquinted butts in WSW arcade plate,
face-halved and bladed scarfs in ENE arcade plate. Unjowled posts and primary
straight bracing in aisle walls (rebuilt in C18 or later). Part of ENE aisle
wall concreted. Clasped purlin roof (rebuilt in C17 or later), with some
re-used smoke-blackened rafters from a medieval hall. Oblique trenches for
passing braces (removed) in some arcade posts and aisle ties, terminating in
mortices in the tiebeams. This barn has remained substantially in its original
form, although some timbers have been replaced in the course of later repairs.
