Four houses. Late C18 or early C19 with later alterations and extensions.
Roughcast stone with exposed stone parts to rear and slate roofs. L-plan,
two storeys, south elevation of seven bays with outbuilding to right which has
projecting one-storey gabled wing, now converted to domestic use. 1st bay forms
Stones Lane Cottage, 2nd, 3rd and 4th bays form The Castle, end bays form Castle
Barn Cottage. Windows are sashed, those to Castle Barn Cottage with horns;
those to ground floor have vertical glazing bars, those to 1st floor with
glazing bars; small-pane French window to 1st bay. The Castle has central
entrance with half-glazed fielded-panel door and gabled trellis porch; Castle
Barn Cottage has gabled porch. Gable-end stack and 3 cross-axial stacks. Left
return has lean-to outshut. Right return has C20 infill panels, glazing and
entrance to one-storey wing, gabled wing and gabled barn entrance; rear wing has
outshut under cat slide roof, large entrance. Rear has wing to left, 2-storey
outshut under cat slide roof, and gabled bay to right. Small-paned casements
and one window with small-paned fixed glazing and opening light. Wing, now Barn
End Flat, has ground-floor garages and end-gabled projecting bay to return.
Small lean-to outshut to gable bay to right. Gable-end stacks. Interior has
re-used plank and muntin partition from former house. Property of the National
Trust, the gift of Beatrix Potter.
