at North Entrance to
Chatsworth Park
II

Pair of lodges, gates, screen and piers, built at the north
entrance to Chatsworth Park. c1839-42 by Jeffrey Wyatville for
the Duke of Devonshire. Ashlar, the roofs hidden behind
parapets. Wrought iron. Pair of lodges either side of the
drive, forming a symmetrical composition. One and two storeys.
Irregular cruciform plan. The east lodge has three bay north
and south elevations. To the north the centre bay is advanced
and has a glazing bar sash to each floor, flanked by paired
pilasters. Similar treatment to the left hand bay. The right
hand bay is the side of the deeply projecting single storey
porch and again has a glazing bar sash and paired pilasters.
Similar elevation to south. To the drive is a doorway with
moulded surround and deeply bracketed hood, flanked by paired
pilasters. The blind bay to the right has raised and fielded
panels flanked by paired pilasters. Moulded first floor band,
plain parapets or blocking course and balustraded parapets to
porch and to centre part of the front range. Six circular
fluted finials and stacks. The west lodge forms a mirror image.
The two lodges are linked by wrought iron gates and screen, the
centre pair of gates ramped and flanked by broad decorative
pilasters with urns. Flanking the drive to the north are iron
screens of fifteen bays, ramped at the north end and returning
inwards to monumental ashlar piers which have sunk panels,
flanked by pilasters and surmounted by caps with round arches
forming cross 'tunnel vaults', each with a sunk panel and a
relief of the Cavendish snake.
