Foundation Walls of
Paxton's Great
Conservatory
GV II
Foundation walls to about three feet in height of the Great Conservatory. 1836-40 by Joseph Paxton. Coursed squared sandstone. Low, slightly inward leaning walls of nineteen by eight bays, divided by square battered piers with flat copings. Each bay has a blind segmental arch. The walls now form an enclosure to the maze, but originally supported the famous ridge and furrow glass house known as the Great Stove which was demolished c1920. The Gardens and Park are included on the Gardens Register at Grade I.
