Grotto in Arboretum

Grotto with summer house above. 1798 by White Watson.
Remodelled in 1820 at a cost of £428. Sandstone, cement and
timber. Welsh slate roofs. Grotto constructed of massive
sandstone boulders, built into the hillside with a curving
front. Roughly round-arched entrance. Rectangular room behind
with coursed squared sandstone walls and pitched slate roof.
Circular rotunda behind with pitted finish to the walls.
Surmounted by a rustic timber summer house of eight tree trunks
supporting a conical slate roof. Latticework balustrade of
roughly prepared branches. The Gardens and Park are included on
the Gardens Register at Grade I.
