Barn and adjoining linhay. Mid or late C19. Stone rubble with red brick quoins;
pantile roof.
L-shaped building. There is a relatively short threshing barn facing south-east
onto the farmyard and adjoining the right (north-eastern) end of an earlier barn and
shelter (q.v.). At its left end there are opposing doorways onto the threshing
floor and to rear right a horse-engine house. This maybe secondary since it partly
blocks the rear doorway. From the front right end of the barn a former linhay
projects at right angles facing south-west onto the farmyard.
Only the doorway of the barn projects shows in the farmyard; C19 full height double
plank doors with coverstrips, one is split into flaps. Rear barn doors are
identical. Barn roof is gable-ended to left and hipped to right. The linhay was
originally open-fronted. It was a 4 1/2 bay linhay with full height posts (Alcock's
linhay Type T1). It has since been converted to pigsties at which time the lower
section was bricked up and includes 2 C20 doors and 3 windows and the hayloft was
weather-boarded and includes 2 loading hatches. The linhay is lower than the barn
and is gable-ended.
Interior: barn is open to a 3-bay king post truss roof. The linhay has a 7-bay roof
of identical trusses. The linhay has a C20 feeding passage along the rear which is
probably an original feature since the doorways each end are original.
This barn and linhay form a group with the other farmbuildings which enclose the
farmyard to rear of Stantaway Farmhouse (q.v.) and also contribute to the charming
group of listed buildings along Otterton Fore Street.
