Description

OTTERTON FORE STREET (north side),
SY 0885
Otterton
7/148 Stantaway Farmhouse including
24.7.85 stable-block adjoining to north-
east
GV II
House, former farmhouse and stables. Probably C16 and C17 origins, apparently
rebuilt in mid C19. Plastered stone rubble including some cob; brick stacks and
chimney shafts; slate roofs. Stable block is exposed stone rubble with brick
dressings and slate roof.
3-room-and-through-passage plan house facing south-east onto Fore Street. The
layout may derive from a C16 or C17 hall-house but no early fabric shows to support
such a hypothesis. The passage is left of centre and contains the stairs. The end
rooms have gable end stacks and the centre room has a rear lateral stack. The
stable block projects at right angles to rear of the right end and the room closest
the house is domestic. Service outshots across the rest of the rear. 2 storeys.
Regular but not symmetrical 4-window front of C19 and C20 casements with glazing
bars. Front passage doorway left of centre contains a C19 6-panel door. Roof is
gable-ended. Stable block is also gable-ended and contains a C19 casement with
glazing bars to each front near room the house. Behind that the former stables
proper contain a C19 plank door, a contemporary unglazed window to left and a
hayloft loading hatch. The gable end has C20 garage doors with a C19 casement with
glazing bars under a brick segmental arch to the hayloft.
Interior shows only C19 and C20 joinery detail. Roof not inspected.
Stantaway Farmhouse with its attractive group of farmbuildings (q.v.) to rear is one
of a good group of listed buildings in Otterton Village.
