Description

OTTERTON FORE STREET (north side),
SY 0885
Otterton
7/150 Barn and byre approximately 9
metres north-west of Stantaway
24.7.85
Farmhouse
GV II
Barn and adjoining byre. C18 with minor late C19 alterations. Exposed red cob on
local stone rubble footings, patched here and there with C19 brick; thatch roof.
Single block facing north-east into the farmyard. The left (south-eastern) half is
a former threshing barn with opposing double doors onto the threshing floor. The
right (north-western) half is a cow byre with hayloft over (possibly built as
stables). Another very small byre has been added onto the right end.
The barn has full height double doors flanked by short projecting midstrey walls.
The plank doors are C19 and 1 is split into flaps. This is set near the left end of
the front (and left of centre in the barn section) and there is a loading hatch high
in the wall to right. The byre has a central front door flanked by unglazed windows
and with loading hatch directly above. Again the joinery is late C19. This section
of the front is much patched with brick and the original arrangement appears to have
been 2 doorways each with a window to right. The roof is hipped each end and on the
right end the roof is carried down over the secondary byre which is set back from
the front.
Interior. The 2 halves are separated by a cob crosswall up to eaves level with
boarded timber framing up to the apex. The byre hayloft is carried on probably C19
replacement unchamfered crossbeams. The barn is open to the roof. The roof is
continuous over both sections and is original. It is 6 bays (3 each) and made up of
A-frame trusses with spiked and pegged lap-jointed collars and X-apexes.
This barn and byre is an unusual example of a traditional Devon farmbuilding which
is still thatched. Furthermore it forms part of a group with the other
farmbuildings which make up the farmyard behind Stantaway Farmhouse (q.v.) and also
contribute to the charming group of listed buildings along Otterton Fore Street.
