Farmhouse. C16 or early C17, partially destroyed by fire in C19; remodelled in
the early C19 and partly rebuilt in the late C19. Earlier work external former
end stack of volcanic trap ashlar with brick shaft; early C19 work stuccoed;
late C19 work of random rubble trap. All under hipped and gabled-end, slate
roof. Originally a 3-room, cross passage plan; the former upper end was
remodelled and extended forward to create a symmetrically-fronted double-depth
house. The lower-end was largely rebuilt later in the century to form a separate
cottage, aligned at right-angles to the existing house. Early C19 (main) front:
symmetrical, under a hipped slate roof, with brick end stacks; 3 bays. Central
6 panel C19 door (beaded panels below, glazed panels above) under porch with
moulded canopy supported by chamfered posts. All windows the original C19
hornless timber sashes; those to first floor, 2 windows with 4 panes above and 8
below, to either side of a central window with 3 panes above, and 6 below.
Ground-floor windows with 8 panes above and below to each sash. Two C20 casement
windows to right-hand side. To the left of this block, set well back on the
alignment of the old house is a window of 3-round-headed lights, timber with
hexagonal leaded panes and containing early C19 coloured glass in the spandrels.
Elevation of left-hand end: external former end stone stack with brick shaft
continues in ashlar of C16/17 to right with slate capping; at first floor late
C19 two 2-light timber windows to the left, one to the right; a single 2-light
window to the left of entrance, which is placed under an open porch slate-roofed
on brackets. All windows with timber casements under C19 depressed window
arches. Interior: left-hand room with end fireplace with stone jambs (lintel
replaced) and one deeply chamfered axial beam with step stops. A rear room
(probably a former parlour wing) with 3 axial beams, chamfered with hollow step
stops. Roof: all replaced in early and later C19 rebuilds. Also known as Hayescote.
