6/24 The Thatched Cottage
(right of a pair)
GV II
Cottage, pre 1837 (Tithe Map), probably for the 1st Marquis of
Westminster. Red squared snecked sandstone with thatched roof and two
stone chimneys with tall, slender diagonal flues. One and a half
storeys; 3 windows. Projecting corbelled upper storey. Iron lattice
casements under label lintels. Thatched dormer to front, left, with
C20 timber casement. A front gable, right, carries a stone niche.
Thatched eyebrow dormers to rear. The materials and detailing suggest
a building of 1810-20,a cottage ornée.
Interior. Doors of 3 or 4 wide boards, painted, probably softwood,
early C19.
The cottage adjoins an oak-framed C17 thatched cottage, which it was
evidently designed to complement (q.v.)
