Description

CAMBORNE CHURCH VIEW ROAD
SW 64 SE
Tuckingmill
5/43 (south side)
Parochial School and No.75
GV II
Parish school with attached master's house, now meeting room and private
dwelling. Dated 1845 on west gable; slightly altered. Coursed dresssed red
sandstone with granite dressings (house now painted white), with roofs of
modern pantiles and slate respectively. School is T-plan with main range
on north-south axis and wing projecting on west side, house attached to
rear of north end of main range. All in Tudor style, with plinth, mullion-
and-transom windows under hoodmoulds, and steeply-pitched roofs. The
one-and-a-half storey north facade (school to right and house to left) has
a round-headed doorway offset to the left, with chamfered surround and
hoodmould; to the left, the house has a 6-light window altered to make a
separate doorway in the centre and right-hand lights, and 2 single-light
windows above; to the right, the school has a large 10-light window and a
single-light window above, with original diamond-pattern glazing in wooden
cames; the same glazing survives in the fenestration of the west side: an
8-light window in the main range on each side of the wing, and a large
10-light window in the gable of the wing. The main range south of the
wing has a round-headed doorway with hoodmould (up 4 steps protected by
iron handrails), and the gable of the wing has a cast-iron plaque with
raised lettering:-
"PAROCHIAL.SCHOOL
TUCKINGMILL
1845"
The item faces the Church of All Saints, Pendarves Street (q.v.) and is
probably by the same architect, J.Hayward of Exeter.
