Large house. Probably rebuilt in late C16 for Vernon family, incorporating
additions and alterations from all subsequent periods up to the C20. Earlier
work is of ashlar on chamfered plinth; later work of coursed, squared rubble.
Graduated slate roofs. Asymmetrical plan, mostly 2 storeys with attics.
Present panelled front door is in C19 rebuilt single-storey section; 2 sashes to
left. Main block to north has 2-light stone-mullioned window inserted in former
doorway; casement inserted under hoodmould to right. 2 multi-light stone
mullioned-and-transomed windows under hoodmoulds to 1st floor with 3-light stone
mullioned window in gabled dormer above. Inserted windows to gable end of north
wing. Gable end of south wing has part-glazed door in chamfered surround with
dated lintel above; date originally read 1610 but was recut to read 1676 when
stair wing was added. Numerous original multi-light windows survive on other
elevations. Corniced stone chimneys. Interior retains a number of early
features including panelled doors throughout, a spiral stone stair, a massive
stepped stone fire hood over the present kitchen's fireplace, and an extremely
fine dog-leg, closed string stair of c.1676 with large, turned balusters, a
moulded handrail, and newels which are square in plan with applied carved
decoration and ball finials.
