Former farmhouse. Circa early C17, possibly a remodelling of an earlier house, some
late C18 rebuilding, late C20 repair. Colourwashed rendered cob and stone rubble;
thatched roof with plain ridge hipped at left end, half-hipped at right end; left end
stack to main block, axial stack with stone shaft.
Plan: Present plan single depth, 4 rooms wide with a rear right stair projection.
The left hand room is a converted outbuilding with a tiled lean-to roof, the 3 right
hand rooms are a circa early C17 3 room plan house, with evidence of a former cross
or through passage to left of centre, the rear of the passage subsequently converted
to a pantry and now absorbed into the left hand (lower end) room. The hall stack
backs on to the former passage, the lower end room may originally have been unheated;
unheated narrow inner room. Plank and muntin screen at higher end of hall appears to
be C16 rather than C17 and is more finely finished on the inner room than hall side.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front with C20 lean-to porch with tiled
roof. 3-light C20 timber casements with glazing bars except ground floor right which
has a C17 timber mullioned 3-light window. Rear doorway into inner room.
Interior: The hall has an open fireplace with a timber lintel and bread oven;
chamfered scroll-stopped cross beam. Plank and muntin oak screen at higher end of
hall with chamfered muntins, the muntins stopped on the inner room face only. "Darey
door" painted above doorway in screen to inner room.
Roof: Construction of side-pegged jointed crucks surviving (incomplete) below C20
roof. The foot of the right end cruck is visible, extending to the stone rubble
footings of the right end wall.
