Shoal of Furze
II
Small detached cottage. Early C18, a date of 1701 is in deeds. Cob or white-
washed rubble, exposed rubble stack raised in brick, thatched roof. A small
one-up/one-down cottage with large stack at back gable, the lower end, to road,
hipped. Two storeys, 1 window; 2 steel and one 2-light casements; return,
right, has a small 2-light at each level, and here is an extension (not of
special interest). Left side has thatch swept down over small extra room. C20
door in lean-to porch. Interior has early beams, C20 fireplace, various early
plank doors, and spiral staircase, back left by stacks. Cottage lies on the
edge of a disused quarry. The name is not explained, but the building seems too
small to have been an ale house. It lies beside a disused quarry.
