BIGBURY
COOMBE FARM
Barn range to south of Coombe Farmhouse
(previously listed as Outbuilding at Combe Farmhouse to SE)

II

Large barn range. Some remnants of C16 work, but most fabric appears to be C18
or C19. Some squared coursed work, much thin-bedded rubble; some stone slate,
mainly slate roofs. In two sections, a long 2-storey range to the left (east)
end with a 1-bay lean-to far left, and second, slightly higher and earlier range
to the right. Towards farmhouse the left half has large stable door in lean-to
section, then pair wide plank doors over further door. To the right, at ground
floor a small opening, a blocked former doorway with very long thin voussoirs to
a slightly pointed near semi-circular arch, and a doorway to shouldered head.
At upper level are two small shouldered openings to chamfered surrounds. Far
side of this unit has large swept-down roof surface above a series of seven
plank doors to eaves height, separated by sections of rubble wall. The upper
half in two storeys, has one plank door and a second blocked opening and one
plank door with sidelight to chamfered wood lintol. The right, hipped return
end has a very early plank door set deep to a wood lintol in heavy frame to
wooden arched head, all in poor condition; this set at head of 6 stone and tile
steps. Back of this section is in 3 windows, including, top right, remains of a
2-light casement with wood mullion. Wide plank door to segmental head.
Projecting corrugated iron roofed unit at right angles, at junction of two main
units. Interiors not generally accessible, but west half has C19 King-post roof
structure, and east half said to have rebuilt roof. A substantial farm range.
