Hingston Borough Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. C16 or early C17. Rendered rubble, corrugated asbestos cement roof,
rubble stacks. Three-room cross-passage plan with lateral stack to middle room,
extended with a cottage at the upper end, and a wing returned towards the lane,
giving an L-plan. Road front has lean-to and is plain except for entrance door
to right; return front to wing has horizontal 8-pane sash above a 2-light case-
ment. Main, garden front, steps up slope to right, has scatter of C19 and C20
casements, mainly 2-light; at left end is a section of thicker, projecting
walling and a glazed conservatory above glazed door. Roof breaks pitch between
second and third windows where cross-passage emerges through C20 door and light-
weight gabled porch; immediately right of porch is large stepped external
lateral stack, then further two windows and door under light gabled porch to
cottage. Right return has 2-light casement; left end is hipped with large
rubble ridge stack, raised in brick. Outer return has two 2-light casements.
Interior: Series of very broad chamfered lateral beams. To right of cross-
passage a peaked-head doorway down to kitchen which also has a smoking
chamber, formerly domed, adjoining the fireplace. A stone spiral said to have
been taken out from alongside the central fireplace. Some good C19 plank
doors. Not fully inspected, roof structure not seen. The building has been
heavily modified in the C20.
