County Hall. Council chamber, associated suite, and local government offices. 1963-66. F.K.Hicklin (succeeded by A J Groves) County Architect. In-situ reinforced concrete frame structure, board-marked exposed concrete, storey height pre-cast concrete cladding panels with exposed aggregate, aluminium window frames, slate infill panels. Limestone facing to council chamber, Delabole slate paving. Three storeys, on steeply sloping site, allowing additional and largely open lower level to south, east and west. Pilotis allow building to 'float' over sloping site and maintain views out to south. Compact single clock of courtyard plan; flat roof Council chamber at first floor level is cantilevered to project eastwards. High quality finishes throughout. Good example of concrete work, giving grey strong texture to emulate local Cornish tradition. Landscaped design by G.A.Jellicoe; internal courtyard has sculpture "Rock form, Porthcurno" Barbara Hepworth. Some minor remodelling internally. A rigorous and consistent design of high quality which relates well to its internal courtyard and to the scale and character of the wider Cornish landscape beyond. A fine example of a county hall in a modern idiom.
