Vicarage, now hotel. 1850s, extended early C20 and 1989.
Killas rubble walls with granite dressings; steep dry Delabole
slate roofs; axial stone stacks over original cross wing and
towards right another stack over parallel rear roof and axial
stack towards right.
U-shaped plan, since the addition of early C20 wing on the
right: original plan had 2 front rooms with entrance hall
between. Gothic Revival style. Single storey plus attics; 4
bays with flanking gabled wings. Gabled hood over arched
doorway; relieving arches over 2-light trefoil-headed window
to left and 3-light trefoil-headed window to right; 2-light
plate-tracery window to first floor of left-hand gable.
Similar arched gables over attic dormers which have original
casements. C20 wing has 2-window gable end.
INTERIOR: original straight-flight stair with trefoil-headed
balustrade; pointed-arched stone doorway to rear of passage;
original pointed-arched serving hatch between original
right-hand room and kitchen behind and moulded plaster ceiling
bands to front rooms. First floor not inspected. SUBSIDIARY
FEATURES: rear wall adjoins at right-angles to rear and has
pointed-arched doorway and granite coping with roll moulding.
Probably designed by the then incumbent, Reverend William
Haslam, who was a friend of the noted ecclesiological
architect William White and who designed the Church of St
George(qv): this vicarage reflects the influences of White and
other ecclesiological architects such as Street who both had
worked in Cornwall by the early 1850s. Included for group
value.
