Two terraces of colliery housing, c.1875 for the Wearside Iron and Coal Company.
Tooled squared sandstone fronts with coursed rubble returns and rears. Welsh
slate roofs with dark-red brick chimney stacks. North terrace (Nos. 1 to 20)
on level site; south terrace (Nos. 21 to 38) is stepped down slightly-sloping
site. 2 storeys. Flush tooled quoins at ends of each terrace. Each house
one bay with doorways alternately to right and left of ground-floor windows.
Mainly replaced 6-panel doors with overlights under flush lintels. No. 1
retains original 4-panel door with 3-pane overlight. Windows have flush
lintels and projecting sills: mainly late C20 12-pane casements but several
houses retain 12- and 16-pane sashes. Moderately-pitched hipped roofs:
continuous ridge on north terrace; ridge of south terrace is stepped down.
Stepped transverse ridge stacks with oversailing top courses. One-storey,
2-bay lean-to addition with horizontal-sliding sashes on right return of
No. 1. Rear additions are not of special interest.
A late, though relatively unaltered pair of terraces still early C19 in style.
Despite replaced doors and refenestration all the original openings remain.
