GV II*
Summerhouse forming belvedere to west of, and closing western
vista of, Western Pergola (qv). c1912. By Thomas H Mawson as
part of a continued garden scheme for Lord Leverhulme at The
Hill (now Inverforth House) (qv). This part of the garden is
now in separate ownership to the house; for the house garden
features see Inverforth House, North End Way entries. Brick
screen walls with rusticated quoins. Pyramidised slate roof.
Western side open with Portland stone Doric columns carrying
stone entablature with decorated lead rainwater gutter.
Attached cast and wrought-iron balustrade, of scroll and
floral design, to viewing platform with good views over
Hampstead Heath and into northern garden. North & south
facades, lunettes with keystones and tile dressings. Eastern
facade to pergola has a stone niche in rectangular surround
with keystone.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the terraces were constructed using spoil
from the Hampstead Tube excavation. Excellent views over
Hampstead Heath and back towards the house. The garden was
divided when the house became a hospital; this part of the
garden is open to the public.
