Temple summerhouse, aligned westwards on Inverforth House
(qv), linking Western Pergola (qv) and Bridge (qv). c1912. By
Thomas H Mawson as part of a continued garden scheme for Lord
Leverhulme at The Hill (now Inverforth House). This part of
the garden is now in separate ownership to the house; for the
house garden features see Inverforth House, North End Way
(qv). In the form of a circular temple on a brick and stone
banded plinth. Brick banded Portland stone walls open on east
and west sides with Doric columns (west side also with
wrought-iron gate) and to the south with balustrade.
Entablature and projecting modillion cornice with lion masks
at intervals; copper domed roof. Approached on western side
from Western Pergola by a flight of steps with stone
balustrades.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the terraces were constructed using spoil
from the Hampstead Tube excavations. Excellent views towards
house and Southern Pergola (qv) and over Hampstead Heath. The
garden was divided when the house became a hospital; this part
of the garden is open to the public.
