(Formerly Listed as:
NORTH END WAY
Western Pergola in Hill Garden at
Inverforth House)
GV II*
Colonnaded pergola, aligned westwards on Inverforth House
(qv), running east-west for approx 100m and linking the
Western Summerhouse (qv) and Central Temple Summerhouse (qv).
c1912. By Thomas H Mawson as part of a continued garden scheme
for Lord Leverhulme at The Hill (now Inverforth House). This
part of the garden is now in separate ownership to the house;
for the house garden features see Inverforth House, North End
Way entries. Paired and single Doric columns of Portland stone
carrying a timber pergola superstructure imitating a Doric
entablature. Solid brick screen wall on north side. Tiled
pavement; approached by balustraded steps at north-west end
from northern garden and with steps on the south side.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the terraces were constructed using spoil
from the Hampstead Tube excavations. Views south across
Hampstead Heath woodland and at western end into northern
garden. The garden was divided when the house became a
hospital; this part of the garden is open to the public.
