- Ivy Lodge
GV II
Entrance lodge belonging to Woburn Abbey. Early C19, probably by Humphry
Repton, for John 6th Duke of Bedford, reworked late C19. Coursed ironstone
with some ashlar dressings. Small single-storeyed building in Gothick style,
later reworking more in Tudor style, N elevation (facing footpath): 3-bay
facade, central one a canted bay. One window to LH bay, apparently replacing
a door, 3 windows to central canted bay. All are 2-light pointed arched
windows with wood Y-tracery, some with opening casements and apparently
originally with leading (now mostly removed). RH bay has doorway with pointed
arched fanlight retaining Y-tracery glazing bars and intersecting leading.
C20 replacement door has 4-centred-headed moulding. Pointed arches all have-
heavy ironstone voussoirs and keystones. Embattled parapet. W elevation
(towards road): reworked late C19. Central canted bay is apparently addition
of this date, and has stone dressings to window, each light leaded and with 4-
centred-arched head. Adjoining to LH is pedestrian gateway with stone
dressed 4-centred archway. LH pier of gateway has plaque with Russell
armorial shield, reworked or replaced C20. Gateway and lodge have stone
coped embattled parapet. Adjoining lodge to RH is short stretch of red brick
screen wall stepped down in 4 stages to pier at road edge. Hall has coping
similar to lodge and gateway. Pier has same armorial shield (also reworked)
and moulded cap as pier of gateway.
