5/36 Carpenter's Farmhouse

Farmhouse, now house. C17 origin, refronted and extended to right early C19,
with later alterations. Rubble, rendered, triple roll tiled roof with stone
ridge stack and gable stack to right, raised coped verge to right (possibly
formerly thatched), pantiles and double Roman tiles to rear outhouse roofs.
Through passage plan, probably originally only 2 rooms to left with ridge stack
at former gable end; higher roof ridge to right of stack. 2 storeys and
4 windows, 2-light casements under eaves, ground floor has six 2-light casements
with wooden lintels and keys, central glazed early C20 porch, plain inner door
with glazed panel, lean-to left and right with 4-pane light to left. Left
return has single light in lean-to, right return has loading door in lean-to and
door with strap hinges to rear. Rear has 2-light casement at first floor right,
single storey C20 lean-to with glazed door, connecting house to formerly separate
single storey outbuilding, possibly former bakehouse, with stack and oven to side
and pantiled roof; taller single storey C19 addition to left side of bakehouse
with 2 stable doors and 2-light casement, double Roman tiled roof; small open-
fronted barn attached to rear with 4-bay roof of principal rafters, one row of
purlins and collar. Interior: room to left has rounded beam with hooks;
central room has chamfered beam with step and run-out stops, heavy uneven lintel
to fireplace with later C19 brick oven built in to left, C20 replacement winder
stair to rear, wall to passage possibly former external wall; rooms to right of
passage have higher ceiling level at ground and first floor. Roof not accessible
at time of survey (March 1985) but probably of C19 rebuilding.
