6/199 The Poplars
II
Brush factory, now house. Early C19. Flint with brick dressings
and lacings, some chalk block to rear. Slate roof. Three storeys,
3 bays, central pair of half-glazed doors. Recessed panels above
with timber lintel and containing window. All windows C20, paned
timber, those to ground and first floors with painted stone or
rendered wedge lintels with key blocks and cambered soffits. Stack
to right gable. C20 lean-to to right contains recessed main
entrance. Deep recess 2 storeys high to right gable with paned
windows, and late C19 two-bay 2 storey rear wing at right angles
with a later lean-to on road side. Building probably originally a
water mill, the earlier, partly timber framed mill house,
Riverside, attached to rear and too altered to be of special
interest.
