10/15 High Lodges of Aske Hall

Gateway, gates, screen walls and 2 lodges. c1847 and 1897. For the Earl of
Zetland. Ashlar sandstone, stone slate roofs, wrought-iron gates. Screen
walls: curving in plan, with interval pilasters with small obelisk finials
and raised terminating piers with bases, vermiculated banding at coping
level, cornices and blocking. Gateway: round arch with vermiculated
keystone and interval voussoirs, the spandrels with wreaths with intertwined
initials, flanked by paired Tuscan pilasters with vermiculated bands and
lozenge panels on dado; brackets to cornice. Gates: decorated with
scrollwork. Lodges: of matching design, the east lodge dated 1847, the west
lodge 1897; L-shaped plan; single-storey with gable wing projecting from
north end, 1:1 bays; in angle, flat-roofed porch with 2 round-arched sides;
3-light mullioned-and-transom window in architrave in each bay, with
flanking paired Tuscan pilasters and dated shield above in gabled
projection; north returns have cross windows, south returns have 3-light
matching windows with blind shields above. C20 rear extensions not of
special interest. The gates were made in celebration of the success of the
racehorse Voltigeur, who won The Epsom Derby in 1850.
