8/51 Claughton House
17-4-1967
- II
House, probably C17, altered later C19. Rendered brick with slate roof.
H-plan. 2 storeys. South-west front has C19 windows with timber mullins
and transoms. Both cross-wings of 2 bays with cross windows. Recessed
centre of 3 bays, the outer bays with cross windows, the central bay with
6-light mullioned and transomed windows. Door, in right-hand bay of
centre, has timber surround. Gables have copings with kneelers. Chimneys
to right, with external stack, and at rear. Left-hand return wall has
studded door with strap hinges in a chamfered surround with Tudor-arched
head inscribed 'R 1593 W'. Whether this date applies to any part of the
existing building is not clear. At the rear of the right-hand cross-wing
is a blocked 3-light attic window with brick mullions. Inside, the
right-hand room has chamfered and stopped ceiling beams with later applied
mouldings. The stair has one straight flight with closed string, moulded
handrail and turned and fluted balusters. On the 1st floor is a room in
the central part of the house with C18 raised and fielded panelling, the
fireplace flanked by fluted pilasters. The chimney stack projecting from
the right-hand cross-wing is said to incorporate a garderobe and the
left-hand cross-wing is said to have a roof with curved principals.
