Description

SX 37 NE MILTON ABBOT ENDSLEIGH

9/224 The Dairy Dell Cottage
-
GV II*

Cottage. Circa 1814 for the 6th Duke of Bedford and probably designed by Sir Jeffry
Wyatville. Stone rubble with a slate roof hipped at ends 2 stone stack. A long low
single depth range consisting of a single storey block at the left end linked to a
single-storey and attic heated block at the right end by a rustic loggia in the
middle. Long 3:3 window front elevation overlooking a pond. 3 casement windows in
the left-hand block are 2-light with glazing bars under timber lintels. The right-
hand block has an off-centre rustic gabled porch with Gothick moulding in the gable.
To the left of the porch are two 3-light casements under flat stone arches with high
transoms and glazing bars, square leaded panes above the transoms. To the right of-
the porch is a 3-light casement with glazing bars under a flat stone arch. 2 full
dormers at the right end have hipped slate roofs and casement windows with glazing
bars. The logggia is supported at the front by 3 rustic posts with rustic struts and
has a partly cobbled floor. The right return of the left-hand block consists of
rustic planks on partition walls beneath the loggia. Repairs for the Landmark Trust
underway at time of survey 1985. In Humphry Repton's first scheme for Endsleigh
(1809) which predates the Red Book (1814) a collection of linked cottages was
proposed for "Dell site", but this was probably a design for Endsleigh Cottage (now
Endsleigh House), and the illustration bears no resemblance to the Dairy Dell
Cottage. A letter from Wyatville to Bedford's accountant dated 1814 states "I
certainly will take the Park buildings into consideration. Indeed I believe I have
have already formed the plan in my mind ..." and it seems likely that he was
responsible for the design of the cottage.
