8/179 Stone Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse, C17 but earlier fabric possibly concealed. Extended in late C18 or
early C19. Rendered stone and cob. Slate roofs at 2 levels with gable ends.
Hipped roof to porch. 3 room and through-passage plan extended by additional room
at lower end said to have once been a lean-to and later heightened to 2 storeys.
Brick stack at right gable end heating inner room, ridge stack with brick shaft
heating hall and backing onto through-passage, and further ridge stack, formerly at
gable end with brick shaft heating lower end. 2 storeys, including porch to
through-passage. 7 window range. C20 fenestration, 2- and 3-light casements.
Chamfered beams to inner room and hall which retains its original joists. Scroll-
stopped chamfered beam to lower end which has some C18 joinery and large concealed
fireplace with 2 - bread ovens. The house is of interest as it illustrates 4
locational changes in cooking activity; an infilled bread oven to the hall, 2 bread
ovens to the partially concealed fireplace at the lower end, the added bay at the
lower end was refitted as a kitchen in mid C20, and a late C20 kitchen in an
extension to rear of inner room. First floor rooms have C19 ledged plank doors and
wide 5 plank ledged door to inner porch doorway. Roof structure entirely replaced
in late C18 or early C19.
